Obituary for Ruth M. Laemmel

Ruth Maddison Woollatt Laemmel, 96, born 10/22/1925 in Toronto, Canada, passed away peacefully on 12/14/2021 in Northport, NY. She was a resident of Northport for over fifty years. Ruth spent her last few years at the Atria in East Northport. Ruth studied nursing at Toronto General Hospital and worked as a registered nurse in the backcountry of Canada before moving to the US. She continued her nursing career for over forty years. Ruth retired from St Johnland’s Nursing Home after many years as the night nursing manager. She was an avid figure skater, skier, curling enthusiast & canoeist, loving the outdoors along with her American husband Arthur, whom she married in 1964. In the 1960s, through Cooperative Extension, she met a group of women who would become her lifelong friends. “The Gang” would celebrate birthdays and special occasions and share many laughs and adventures together over the decades. In 1974, Ruth joined Trinity Episcopal Church and was very active in the St. Elizabeth’s Circle, including instructing teens for Confirmation, knitting for the St. Nicholas Bazaar and volunteering at the Thrift shop. In 2016 she was presented with the “Trinity Cross” in appreciation of her many years of service. Besides being a voracious reader and devoted listener to WQXR, Ruth was a great listener and thoughtful friend. One could always count on receiving a letter or uplifting personal card adorned with stickers, for every occasion. Animals were another of Ruth’s loves, feeding the birds, and sharing her home with several dogs and cats throughout her life. Ruth enjoyed carving beautifully detailed wooden birds, taking classes to perfect her skill. Ruth’s close NY friends were like family, and included the Arthurs, the Stones and the Macartneys, and the Smiths of CA and AZ. She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; parents, Dr. Robert Sidney Woollatt, R. Grace Maddison Woollatt & brother G. Randal Woollatt who died in WWII. Funeral arrangements were made by Clayton Funeral Home of Kings Park. A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Northport, Saturday, January 15, at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
