Obituary for Maria L. Montenegro de Isdith

Maria Lily Montenegro de Isdith was born to her parents Luis Montenegro and Julia Montilla Montenegro in Popayán, Colombia on July 13th, 1938. Her children fondly recall hearing the story of how when she was in primary school her father would take time out of his busy schedule to bring her lunch while at school. She always loved the fact that she grew up in a large family with many siblings whom she loved very dearly. In her early twenties, she entered her city’s beauty pageant, and it came as no surprise when she won the title. A true beauty queen, inside and out.

At the age of 25, she married her adoring husband Carlos Isdith and shortly after moved to the United States. There they raised four loving children: John, Marjorie, Julie, and Sandra. She took great pride and felt it was important to raise her children with a love for God. She had a great sense of humor and would constantly joke around. She taught her children to always have joy and laughter in their lives.

She and her husband made their home in Brooklyn with hardly any money and a dream. Together with an innovative spirit, they established Carlili’s Realty Corporation. After many, many years of hard work and dedication they found success. She always helped those less fortunate. Her generosity was well-known and admired. Her heart of gold was always on display every time she generously helped someone out. She enjoyed living a simple life. Nothing materialistic mattered to her.

She shared a love of life that included traveling the world, visiting her favorite casino in Upstate New York, and seeing her horse Cascabel in Puerto Rico. An avid photographer and videographer, she enjoyed reliving the memories of her travels with family and friends every time she looked at her pictures and videos on her beloved iPad.

Maria was a caring wife, mother, and grandmother. Her love for her family and friends was an integral part of her life. She cherished each moment spent with them. She devoted time to create a special bond with each of her six grandchildren: Jonathan, Brittany, Kristen, Paige, Maria Emily, and Maria Giuliana. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her kind, generous, and loving heart.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor can be made to the following charities:
