Obituary for James Stio

James  Stio
Jim Stio was a very active 77 year old until he became ill in November of 2017.
He grew up in Queens NY and has been married to his wife, Betty, for 55 years.
He has 3 children, Christine Stio Capoziello, James Stio and Lisa Stio McLoughlin.

He moved to Kings Park on Long Island NY in 1968 and then to Charlotte NC in 2008 to be near his daughters and 5 grandchildren, Taylor, Timothy, Jack, Kara and Lauren. Jim graduated from St. John’s University with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting.

He then started working and attended Grad School at night at Fordham University, obtaining his MBA, followed by CPA certification. Jim joined the Marine Reserves in 1962 for 6 years. This became a big part of who he was as a person, shaping his values and ethics. Jim worked his whole life as a CPA and Company Comptroller in both the private and corporate sectors. He worked in New York City most of his life with a few years in Cincinnati due to a job transfer He retired from work in 2005 and started volunteering. Jim was a very active member of the Marine Corp. League. He was a member of the honor guard, color guard and firing detail. He assisted with the Toys for Tots program and helped with the Young Marine Program at the Reserve Center in Charlotte NC Jim was an avid golfer his whole life.

When he lived on Long Island he was a member of Smithtown Landing Gold Club. After moving to Charlotte, he was a member of Providence Country Club golf club. He looked forward each October to playing with his son, Jimmy in the member – guest tournament. They even won the tournament a time or two. When he wasn’t with the Marine Corp. League or golfing Jim could be found putting golf balls in the backyard, reading golf magazines or watching golf on TV.

He also enjoyed cooking, eating out with friends, watching sports, doing yardwork and shopping at Restaurant Depot or Costco. He liked to travel and throughout the years went to Aruba, Hawaii, California, France and Italy. When his grandsons were teenagers he would take them on yearly summer trips. They went to Washington DC, New York City, Orlando, Boston and San Francisco. He wasn’t one to sit still and kept very busy. Jim was always ready and willing to help anyone in need and would be the man to call if anything needed to get done.
