Obituary for Joseph A. Ross

Joseph A. Ross
Mr. Joseph Ross passed away peacefully into eternal life on August 23, 2018 at age 55. Joe had cerebral palsy that severely limited his mobility and communication, yet he enriched the lives of countless people. Joe lived the first thirty-five years with his parents in Fort Salonga and then moved to a group home within United Cerebral Palsy in Holbrook, NY. However, he remained an integral part of his family’s life and returned to his parent’s home each weekend to be with them and to attend church at St. Joseph’s in Kings Park. Joe had varied interests. He was devoted fan of the Mets, Islanders, roller coasters, and practical jokes. Joe did not let his physical challenges prevent him from speaking up and sharing his opinions. He was an indomitable advocate for persons with disabilities, serving as a representative for the United Cerebral Palsy Self Advocacy group, where he traveled to Albany to lobby for improved access to services for persons with disabilities. Within his residence and program, Joe never shied from sharing his opinions or concerns, laughed easily, and enjoyed joking with friends and staff. Joe developed an interest and flourish with painting and with the support of his program, produced a variety of landscapes and oil paintings, several of which were sold to raise money for UCP programs. Most of all, Joe loved spending time with the persons he loved and he served as a witness of fortitude and grace for all who knew him. Joe is survived by his devoted parents Joseph and Miriam Ross of Fort Salonga, his brother Michael Ross and sister-in-law AnnMarie Ross and his nieces and nephews Catherine, Ian, and Micaela Ross. The Ross family would also like to thank the extraordinary staff at United Cerebral Palsy at his home and day program for their enduring love and support of Joe throughout his life. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to United Cerebral Palsy athttp://www.ucp-li.org/donation.html
