Obituary for Michael F. Ryan

Ryan, Michael F. of Boca Raton, Fl., formerly of Stony Brook, NY on April 5, 2018 at the age of 72. Michael was a retired Lieutenant of the Suffolk County Police Dept. Michael and his late wife Maureen were major plaintiffs in the Agent Orange lawsuit filed against chemical corporations that sprayed dioxin (Agent Orange) in the jungle during the Vietnam War. These sprayings resulted in many serious medical conditions to Vietnam Veterans and their children. Their case was profiled in the book “Kerry, Agent Orange and an American Family” published in 1982. Their legal and public efforts resulted in many veterans of Vietnam receiving compensation for medical problems sustained from Agent Orange exposure, but the children were excluded and did not receive recognition or compensation. Michael Ryan often reflected that his late daughter Kerry’s name should be inscribed on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C., as her congenital problems, and early death at the age of 35 resulted from his exposure to the deadly chemical. Michael was the cherished son of the late Vicki and Mick Ryan of Kings Park, NY, beloved husband of the late Maureen (O’Connor) Ryan, and loving father of the late Kerry Ryan. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Michael and Marya Ryan, by his sister Deirdre Ryan and sister and brother-in-law Patty and Fred Stransky and by his niece and nephew Maureen and Kevin Stransky. Reposing Friday 2-4 & 7-9pm at Clayton Funeral Home, Inc. 25 Meadow Rd. Kings Park, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday 9:30am at St. Joseph RC Church, Kings Park, NY. Interment to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Smithtown, NY. In lieu of flowers donations to the Disabled American Veterans at www.dav.org.
