Obituary for Patrick J Reilly

Reilly, Patrick Joseph., affectionately known as Paddy of Kings Park, New York died of natural causes at the age of 91 on June 9th. He leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Mary Lovett Reilly and his 4 children Maryellen Korman, Claire Patrice Reilly, Patrick Terrence Reilly and Kevin Charles Reilly,as well as 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren (with two more on the way). Paddy was born September 27, 1922 in Motherwell, Scotland, UK, while his Irish parents were traveling abroad. The Irish family immigrated to America in 1926 and little Paddy was raised in the Yorkville section of Manhattan with his sisters Marry Anastasio, Peggy Hughes Doherty, Ann Curtin and brothers John Oliver Reilly, Mickey Reilly and Thomas Frank Reilly. Young Paddy had a most distinguished career as a professional violinist and Golden Glove boxing finalist. He enlisted in the Army during WWII and was decorated with two bronze stars having participated in 287 days of continued frontline combat in four major battles and was the lead non-commissioned officer in the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp in Germany. Upon his return home, he married his neighborhood sweetheart Mary Lovett in 1947, with them and their budding family relocating in 1955 to Kings Park, NY. The former American Legion Post Commander was an active local democrat, honored as Kings Park’s Democrat of the year in 2005 and was Kings Park 2012 Humanitarian of the Year. He was inducted into both the Kings Park Hall of Fame and the Long Island Junior Soccer League Hall of Fame, the latter of which he was a founding father. An early pioneer in the St. Joseph’s C.Y.O Soccer Program, Paddy coached several Long Island championship soccer teams, founded the Kings Park Soccer Club in 1966 and was the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Coach of the Year while coaching Chaminade High School Boy’s Soccer. Paddy was Metropolitan Coach of the Year at C.W. Post College of Long Island University and the first coach to take the C.W. Post Pioneers to the NCAA Regional Men’s Finals- mentoring several of his players through to the professional levels and many to the ranks of coaching. In 1999, with friend Gary Nelson, Paddy co-founded the Elwood Soccer Club, which thrives today and benefits over a thousand local area children. Until very recently, Paddy continued to co-coach the Elwood Women’s Soccer Team with Gary. Paddy’s organizational prowess, leadership and friendship will be remembered by many locals. Memorial visiting will take place Thursday from 2-4:30 and 7-9pm at Clayton Funeral Home, Inc. 25 Meadow Rd. (cor. of Indian Head Rd.) Kings Park. A memorial mass will be offered Friday 10:30am Mass at St. Joseph’s RC Church 59 Church St., Kings Park. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to DPD Attention Murray House, P.O.
